The beginning of the Koch fortune came after Fred Koch was paid $500,000 in the 1930s by Stalin for building 15 oil refineries in the Soviet Union.

In 1934–1935, Fred built Nazi Germany’s third largest oil refinery, the Hamburg Oil Refinery - that supplied fuel for German war planes - for Eurotank. Adolf Hitler personally approved of this plan.

During WWII, allied forces targeted the Hamburg Oil Refinery and other Eurotank properties because they were deemed as “a key component in the Nazi war machine”:

In September 1945, an expert panel called the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey published a 78-page report on a series of six attacks on Eurotank by the U.S. Air Force and Royal Air Force beginning June 18, 1944, and ending April 10, 1945. The introduction to this formerly confidential document…calls the facility “one of the largest modern oil refineries in Germany,” and estimates that the hundreds of bombs dropped by the allied air forces destroyed 80 percent of Eurotank’s buildings, tankage, and equipment.

Citizens for a Sound Economy (CSE) (1984–2004) was a conservative political group operating in the United States. It was established in 1984 by Charles and David Koch of Koch Industries.
